Western Australia’s Coral Coast invites a slow northbound journey, but its scale is easy to underestimate. A successful trip begins with a decision: how far can you comfortably travel with the days you have, while leaving time to enjoy the coast?
From Perth you can shape a shorter trip around the Pinnacles and Kalbarri or plan a longer journey toward Shark Bay, Coral Bay and Exmouth. You do not need to reach every stop for the trip to be worthwhile. Draw the return journey too, unless you have already confirmed a different drop-off arrangement.
Build your route around overnight stops
Start north of Perth. The Pinnacles area makes a distinctive early stop. Check park access and allow for daylight, food and a campsite instead of making a viewpoint the only plan for the day.
Decide how much time to give Kalbarri. Coastal scenery and inland gorges offer different experiences. Review walking conditions and park alerts, particularly during hot weather, and carry adequate drinking water.
Consider the longer coast. Shark Bay, Coral Bay and Exmouth add meaningful distance. If marine activities are the reason for travelling north, give yourself time to respond to wind and sea conditions. A tour or snorkelling day needs its own space in the schedule.
Plan the long gaps before leaving town
The distances between services matter more than a simple point-to-point map suggests. Identify fuel and food stops, check opening arrangements, carry water and keep a margin for detours or delays. Download maps for areas where mobile coverage may be limited and let someone know your intended route.
When you pick overnight stops, look for authorised campgrounds or caravan parks and check the site’s facilities, access and booking requirements. Popular coastal periods can be busy. Booking the nights that anchor the itinerary gives you a clearer picture of how much driving remains between them.
Heat, wildlife and changing plans
Check the forecast, park alerts and local road information each day. Heat can affect walking plans, so consider shorter outings and cooler parts of the day. Allow plenty of daylight for driving and arrival: wildlife can be harder to see around dawn and dusk.
Avoid building an itinerary that depends on a specific swimming or boating day. Keep a second activity in mind, or leave a spare day where the water is central to your trip.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to drive all the way to Exmouth?
No. A shorter trip focused on the Pinnacles and Kalbarri can offer more time at each stop. Compare the full return distance with your available days.
How do I choose where to camp on the Coral Coast?
Look for authorised sites on your intended route, then check access, facilities, current park information and whether your dates require advance booking.
